All things Peavine Alley.

8 Jul Peavine Alley Big Boom Bash

Our annual big Independence related show! At least five or six amazing acts! And some adorable dancing bears (approximately)! As usual it’s your basic picnic bbq potluck grassy gnoll sort of rock and roll show.

I will be making my usual (unusual) pork loin. Please do make comments here about what you are bringing so not everyone brings sausages. You don’t want another sausage fest, do you?

It’s all about the money, except it’s not. These shows are free and we intend to keep it that way. That being said, we also want to ensure the musicians are rewarded for their hard work. Let’s make sure we can help them fuel their questionable-looking vans so they can make it their next gigs by dropping $15 or $20 into their little buckets!

What to bring? You may want a blanket or a chair to sit upon. Will it be warm? Maybe you will want something to snuggle? Your coolest friends are welcome, but please let me know so I can predict numbers.

To join Peavine Alley: https://www.facebook.com/groups/peavinealley/

Note:  Seafood Fest is today.  Avoid downtown Ballard.

If you would like to grill, my gas grill will be available for the entire show. My chimenea will also be available for grilling but not until after the pork loin is done.

Tea is in the sun; pork is in the smoke.

Musicians:  I have mics and cables and amps and a PA.  I also have a cajon and a snare and some other random percussion.  If there is anything you need, let me know.  I’ll do what I am able.

The pork loin is enbrined:  chicken stock, sour cherry juice, balsamic, pomegranate molasses, lemon juice, bay leaves, salt.

I have half a dozen lemons available if anyone needs lemons.

I have put some pork ribs into the sous vide cooker at 137f (probably for 24 hours).

Another reason to come?  Witness my reading of the Declaration of Independence!

Just to be clear, I have been doing these readings for more than a decade and this is not aimed at any particular idiots which may or may not exist.

Remember the potluck is an important element to these events.  Are you thinking of what you may bring?  Let us know!  Not only is it fun to see what others are bringing, you may inspire another.  Be inspirational!

I’m smoking a pork loin in my peculiar way.

8 Jul Peavine Alley Big Boom Bash (PA)

It’s been a busy summer.  So much to do for the Alley.  You have all been great!  Thanks for making this show a fantastic success.  Thanks, especially, to the musicians who come and play music and meet fans and eat food just like the rest of us.  And of course thanks to Harry Oesterreicher and Tobias TheOwl for helping me bring these shows together.  Maybe the world is a little better for our efforts.  Thank you all.

Sat 17 June Scott Mickelson! Returns & the Yard Is Very Changed

Remember when Scott and Jeff played until well after dark and we basically had to shine flashlights on them so they could see what they were doing?  Well, Mickelson is returning and Tobias the Owl is going to open.  We’ll start in the afternoon this time and I bought some portable lights just in case.

Line-up (times are estimates):

15:00 Gates open — get your patch of green!
16:00 Tobias the Owl:  https://www.tobiastheowl.com/
17:00 Scott Mickelson:  http://www.mickelsonmusic.com/

As usual it’s your basic picnic bbq potluck grassy gnoll sort of rock and roll show.  All donations go to the musicians.  Probably they will have stuff you can buy as well.  I’ll post some links here and there below.

I will be making my usual (unusual) pork loin.  Please do make comments here about what you are bringing so not everyone brings pies.  I mean, many of you COULD bring pies.  But someone should probably bring something to go with them.  What’s your preferred potluck portable comestible?

What to bring?  You may want a blanket or a chair to sit upon.  Will it be warm?  Maybe you will want something to snuggle?  Your coolest friends are welcome, but please let me know so I can predict numbers.

Questions?  Ask them below or message one of the moderators!

Grill available for those bringing raw meat!

I want to thank everyone who came out to make this show a success.  I’d especially like to thank Scott Mickelson and Tobias TheOwl for giving us their music for over three hours!  Finally I’d like to say thanks for donating to the musicians as it helps them pay for their expenses as they tour.  It’s all part of a much larger thing and it’s great to participate.

We had great food all around, but I should point out that Z makes the best pies!

We were even able to see the roof of the pergola in action thanks to about seventeen seconds of actual rain.

I hope everyone got enough to eat; I hope everyone got an earful of excellent music; and I hope to see all of you 8 July for the next music show.

“Jimmy, don’t ever get old.” Saturday 18 March

“Jimmy, don’t ever get old.” So sayeth me grandmother.

Fun with Powder
Fun with Powder

I didn’t do an invite-all on this so let me know if anyone is feeling neglected. I’ll add them too!

It’s again my birthday. Let’s eat tacos!

Lamb tacos!

Zina is making tortillas! Would you like to participate in food or drink? Let me know.

I have prepared some food stuff:

Lamb tacos with:
Salsa
Vanilla-honey yogurt (also goat cheese available)
Cabbage
Onions and peppers

Black bean concoction

The salsa is a tomato-mango affair with mint in lieu of cilantro, because lamb. Not very spicy but the wimpiest will cry a little.

In case anyone is wondering: cake should be chocolate and fruitLESS.

“If you like animals, you’ll love lamb.”

Johnny Sangster & Friends Sunday 11 Sept

https://www.facebook.com/events/1546701095633278/

Doors at two; music by three.

Johnny Sangster & Friends
with Rusty Willoughby & Friends (featuring Barb Hunter, Jennifer Sutherland & possibly Johnny Sangster)
PLUS –> The Demon Rind (Kwab Copeland, Bill Herzog, Carrie Robinson & Johnny Sangster)

Johnny will be playing an opening set followed by Rusty and then we’ll rock out with the Demon Rind.

What’s not to love about that?!

You know the drill: music, friends, potluck, sun. I’ll be maknig my famous pork loin. Let us know what you’ll be bringing in the comments. Questions in the comments or write to James directly.

This is going to be a good show. It’s going to be more rock and more roll and more louder than any previous show. Come see the changes in landscape; come see friends old and new; come see some terrific rock and roll in the shade of the cedar trees.

Looking forward to seeing you all for this summer-closing epic show!

What a season finale, eh? I’m exhausted! Thanks to everyone for coming. We had at least 65 humans present yesterday which is a new Peavine Alley record. The food was great, and the music was truly epic. Thanks again, especially to the musicians (and the bartender!). See you all again soon.

The pork is on the smoke…

Also, if you would like strawberry plants, I have probably 50-100 that can be removed (or they will end up buried next week). If you want some to plant at home, bring a plastic tub or bag and you can have as many as you’d like.

If you would like to grill, my gas grill will be available for the entire show. My chimenea will also be available for grilling but not until after the pork loin is done.

The pork loin is in its brine: buttermilk, chicken stock, salt, maple syrup, juice and zest from 16 limes, and tarragon.

I will have plenty of extra limes. No one needs to bring limes.

I’ve been quiet and quite busy. You old-timers will hardly recognize the yard. Even the pork is getting a new treatment. It’s going to be great!

Remember, everyone, it’s a potluck. You are not required to participate but it’s fun so you ought to. Tell us what you are bringing so we can all get excited!

Is it your famous but highly secret garlic and artichoke dip? Is it your great great grandmother’s potato salad? Inquiring minds want to know!

Regardless, this September weather is giving us a pleasant gap in which to have a dry show and even some decent sunshine. Go figure. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday.

Jim Page & Grant Dermody 20 August (Saturday)

https://www.facebook.com/events/955889537865549/

Who doesn’t love a legend? I mean… Robin Hood, Luke Skywalker, Jim Page; the folks who re-write the pages of history. Come see our favorite Seattle folk legend and have a potluck. Music, food, and friends (old and new).

You know the drill: music, friends, potluck, sun. I’ll be maknig my famous pork loin. Let us know what you’ll be bringing in the comments. Questions in the comments or write to James directly.

On the bill:

Tobias the Owl http://www.tobiastheowl.com/
Grant Dermody http://grantdermody.com/
Jim Page http://jimpage.net/

If you bring a kiddie pool or a bucket, I’ll fill it with water for your footsies.

See comments below for more infromation.

Thank you to everyone who came out to see these excellent musicians for an intimate afternoon. Special thanks to Harry Oesterreicher for bringing a kiddie pool. And of course thanks to Jim Page, Grant Dermody, and Tobias TheOwl for putting on such a fine show.

Kiddie pool is still wet if you have dry feet…

The Kiddie Pool has landed! And there is some music too…

My gas grill is… available. It’s a bit tricky due to construction. Let me know if you were hoping to use it. Should be no trouble.

Tea is in the sun; pork is in the smoke. Better get to cleaning…

Making garlic confit in my sous vide: 4 bulbs garlic, olive oil, a shallot sautéd in butter, smoked paprika, and salt. We’ll give it four hours at 190f.

Pork loin brine: 16 limes (juice and zest), 2 bulbs garlic, chicken stock, frozen apple juice concentrate, bay leaves, salt. Gonna chill that over night.

What are you bringing? My usual pie source is out of time this show…

If anyone is coming from or through Wallingford, our friend Alan Wolfson (and His Famous Broken Foot) could use a lift?

Meet the Will: A Movie Knight Adventure

Old Bill and I are in discussions concerning our movie options.  Depending on what we pick it could be one long-assed epic movie or a double-feature.  We’ll keep you posted.

What I can say is that William is visiting from Shanghai with his wonderful spouse and we are happy to host this get-together of friends old and new.

More details to follow (duh).

Fourth Again (BUT on sunny Sunday 3 July)

https://www.facebook.com/events/241587386221754/

Peavine Alley is proud to present the second Fourth on the third. Well, it’s not the second on the third; it’s the second Fourth and it happens to happen on the third. The third is a Sunday which is the seventh day but let’s not go there. So it’s the first Fourth on the third and the first on a Sunday, but it’s our second Fourth in a row.

So, come to Peavine Alley on Sunday the third of July and celebrate the Fourth with friends and music.

Patch up your picnic baskets, folks, because it is as per usual a potluck. Will James smoke a pork loin? It’s anybody’s guess. Will James sous vide some chicken thighs? Who can know such things?! Are you potlucking? We’d love to hear what you will be bringing.

Who is playing? This we can answer (mostly).

Emily Donohue
Animals of grace
Cooper stoulil
Parzival myr popof
Kristina Valencia
Bergman Broom
Tobias the Owl

There has also been a discussion about including a ten second scream for the dead.

What is scheduled? Probably something like this:

Kristina Valencia 3-3:45 PM
Parzival Myr Popof 3:45-4:30
Cooper Stoulil 4:30-5:15
Emily Donohue 5:15-6
Animals of Grace 6 PM
[mic opens after]

Old Bergman and Mr The Owl we will cleverly weave in as appropriate.

I have made it even easier to locate my house from the street by creating a system of hillocks to emulate mountains and valleys. The orange porch light is still burning.

Fortunately the music will be around back. There is plenty of room in my backyard (aka Peavine Alley) for your blankets and chairs and butts.

All donations go to the musicians (the house takes none).

Questions? Ask the thread or ask me.

Did everyone have a great time? I did! Met some terrific people. Ate some wonderful food. And of course enjoyed some fantastic music. Thanks to everyone who came and especially to the musicians who made this all possible. Remember to have your friends join Peavine Alley (or friend me) so they can find out about upcoming events.

Get yer potluck on! I have had the pork loin on smoke since maybe 8:30. The tea is in the sun. The chicken thighs are very thigh. Only about an hour and a half and humans will start arrive at Peavine Alley. See you all soon.

(My phone is on my About page if you need a quick response.)

I have just put the pork loin in its brine (chicken stock, 16 limes, 3 lbs ginger, pepper corns and cloves, apple juice concentrate, and salt), and I have sous vide cooked a whole mess of chicken thighs so they can be quickly grilled on demand.

I have a propane grill and a wood fired grill that will be available for your grilling pleasure (the wood fire will be available after the pork loin is finished).

Any questions?

Musicians: I have mics and cables and amps and a PA. I also have a cajon and a snare and some other random percussion. If there is anything you need, let me know. I’ll do what I am able.

Not going to be as hot as it was last year, so I probably won’t burn the bottoms of my feet from walking around in the sun all day. Only a few days to go.

Jeff Campbell with Mickelson — 10 June (Friday evening show)

https://www.facebook.com/events/577444395762759/

Jeff Campbell and (Scott) Mickelson are coming to play some fine music at our own Peavine Alley. It’s a Friday evening show so head on over after your work-week has weakened you, get revitalized with the musics!

I have made it even easier to locate my house from the street by creating a system of hillocks to emulate mountains and valleys. The orange porch light is still burning.

Fortunately the music will be around back. There is plenty of room in my backyard (aka Peavine Alley) for your blankets and chairs and butts.

Are you potlucking? We’d love to hear what you will be bringing. Unless there is any objection I will be making my usual pork loin.

All donations go to the musicians (the house takes none).

Questions? Ask the thread or ask me.

Check these cats out (and look for music in the thread):

Jeff https://www.facebook.com/JeffCampbellMusic/
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jeffcampbell16

Mickelson https://www.facebook.com/mickelsonmusic/

What an incredible night. Thank you all for coming (and there were about 30 of us in total!). Of course, special thanks to Jeffry Campbell and Scott Mickelson Good food, good music, and good times. And no inclement weather! Best show yet? Maybe. Sunday 3 July is our next adventure. Stay tuned to Peavine Alley for more details. Stay safe, have fun, and see you all soon.

Guess which pork loin is over the coals?

Mariners game tonight. If you are coming from the South, plan accordingly.

Pork loin brine: 16 limes (blender), 3 lbs fresh gingerroot (blender), bulb of garlic (blender) pepper corns and cloves (spice grinder), 1 pint apple juice concentrate, bunch o’ kosher salt, and tarragon.

Have I mentioned how much I live BlendTec?

So you may be saying to yourself (or anyone within earshot) “what the fuck is with this weather?”. Welcome to Seattle.

I have a couple of those portable gazebo things (labeled “canopy” like we stole them from a pickup) and I have arranged the basement so there is a place for food and stuff. Wear a jacket or brrr.

Feel sorry for me because I will be standing over my chimenea with an umbrella smoking the pork loin while y’all are at work (you know, during the lightning storm around noon?). But we are prepared (haha! thanks, Boy Scouts!) and we are determined to have a great time.

See you soon. Kisses!

(On the plus side the predicted accumulated rainfall for tomorrow is <1/10th inch. I’m hoping it gets it out of its system early.)

Only a day to go. So much cleaning remains… gotta get the pork loin… stuffs happening. Getting ready!

The path to the backyard is complete. Tired and sore and hands that look a bit like a butcher board… bring on the fun! Only a trio of days to go.

Full steam ahead toward Friday. I just have to finish this path so going from the sidewalk to the backyard isn’t a hazardous journey. And smoke a pork loin. And clean EVERYTHING. Should be good. Just a few days!

Hasn’t been a lot of food talk yet. Don’t let me hold you back! Any embarrassing tales of the musicians? We won’t repeat them…

Calendar Reset Game Day

Well, the god of the day has successfully kicked the god of the night in the nads and sent him crawling.  It’ll take that poor god months to get his bearings again and head back this way.

Nonetheless, our calendar arbitrarily ends Thursday at midnight and last year we made a nice game night of it.  We played several rounds of Sortie.

I am opening my home, my table(s), and my game cupboards to my gaming besties.  Let’s make another fine mess of it, Ollie?!

Come hang out, miss all the stupid drunk persons.  All our persons will be at least modestly intelligent.

Game discussions welcome.

RSVP because I only have so many chairs.

I have decided to make goulash (based on my mom’s recipe).  Let me know if you’d like to bring any game-appropriate snacks.

I picked a couple bottles of bubbles just in case gamers be gettin’ crazy.

You know how in fairy stories someone is always saying how important it is to stay on the path?  My front yard is a bit like a fairy story:  stay on the path and no harm will come to you.  There are now three paths all leading to the front door.

Goulash is on; bubbles are chilling; I had a go at brittle (consider it a test run); finishing some dishes.  Looks like I’ll be able to lie down for a spell before anyone gets here.  Questions?  Best to call me at this point.  (My phone number is on my About page here.)

Calendar Reset Game Day

Fun fun fun.  Thanks, everyone.

Good-Night Movie Night Saturday Night

Last (and only) movie night of the summer backyard this year.  Sorry about the short notice but the weather has been sketchy.  Saturday is going to be nice:  sunny and nice during the day, so dry and temperate in the dark.

18:00 optional grilling hour
19:00 Find spot on grass and squint at invisible cartoons
20:00 Guardians of the Galaxy
22:00 (or so) World’s End
00:00 lots of hugs

I have popcorn on demand, hot dogs and sticks and fire, sangria, and iced tea.  There are rumors of cake.  There will be a nice table for shared nibbles.

Put your questions to me.  See you near sunset.

No, I will not be showing a musical this Saturday. Though it is tempting…

Yes, periodic napping during the films is allowed.

Sangria is macerating:  4 bottles of decent cab s, 2 angelo pears, 1 gorgeous peach, and 2 gorgeous plums (seriously beautiful specimens).

If you would like to grill some food, you may want to get here a little early.  Just let me know so I’m ready for you.

Yes, you can bring your cool friends.  Give me a shout if you have questions.

Iced tea is in the sun and the sangria is pretty much ready.  See you in this evening.

The famous “What to Bring” post.

1.  something to sit upon (camp chair, chaise lounge, Persian rug)
2.  something to keep you warm (coat, blanket, hookers, rum)
3.  snacks (more below)
4.  sips (more below)

I will have my chiminea burning and I have hotdog sticks (and dogs).  I also have my gas grill available (and a full kitchen for that matter).  These can all be put at your disposal if you’d like to prepare something.

I also have a full-on popcorn machine.  How much popcorn we can make is only limited by how much time I have between doing other things and whether anyone else knows how to use the thing (they are pretty simple but require some skill).

I’m making sangria.

Others are encouraged to bring things and to post what they are bringing here (so we don’t end up with 37 varieties of carnitas and seven buckets of vodka—too much of a good thing to be sure).

There is plenty of room on the grass for folks to plant a blanket or a chair.  I have several chairs but if you have one, please consider bringing it.  Same for warming blankets:  I have several but please consider bringing something.  It will get chillier as the evening progresses.

My hookah will be set up in the corner.  It uses Arabic tobacco (tobacco with molasses, spices, and fruit).  Smokers of other varieties should be considerate of the air space of others (hence the hookah is in the corner).

Um, what else?  Probably other stuff.  Post your questions and I will answer them.

Donations are accepted but never required (they help me pay for bulbs and movies and propane and popcorn).  I’d rather have you here for free than not here because you didn’t have a couple of extra dollars.  (And I usually forget to pass the tip jar around anyway.)

Getting down to the wire.  Starting to haul things into the yard.  Better to call me at this point since I may or may not see Fb.  Also, does anyone have charcoal for a hookah?  I’m apparently out.

Starting first film (Guardians of the Galaxy) in five.

Second movie will be more like half past ten.  Lots of popcorn available!

Second movie (World’s End) in five.

Good-Night Movie Night Saturday Night

Rain?  Ok.  Did not see that coming.

Thanks, everyone, for coming out and enjoying this double-feature under the black blanket of night.  We sneaked this in like threading a needle, apparently.
