The Great Gort Movie Night Reunion

Carl Gort and family will be in the Seattle area for (approximately) the month of August.  He would like to get together for a movie night with many of his old chums and perhaps a few new friends.

Let’s be very potlucky!  What better way to alleviate the awkward lagging conversations than to talk about your recipe?

As usual, I will have both my chiminea burning and my gas grill available for cooking.  I have lots of cooking equipment at my disposal, so feel free to get in touch with me if you had any particular requirements.

Also, the usual note applies.  If you have a favorite camping chair or blanket for laying out in the grass, please bring it along.  I imagine it will still be pretty warm at night, but you may as well bring a jacket along to ward off any chills.

If you have any questions, please ask Lisa Goshorn, Tami Wolff, or me (I can’t tag myself).  My contact information is on my About page here on Fb.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you.

Films TBD.  (One of them may well be The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.)

I will send out invitations soon.  Look for yours at an inbox near you!

RED is another possible movie.  I’m so pleased they are making a sequel.

This is about a week and a half away.  Are there any thoughts about food?  I’ll be making some sort of fire-roasted meat, I suppose.

Hooray for today!  See you all soon. Remember, my address and telephone are on my About page here on Facebook.  You should call me if you need anything as I will not likely be back on Facebook before the show tonight (19:00 hours!—that’s 7 PM).

The Great Gort Movie Night Reunion

What a great evening with friends.  We watched some Brothers Quay and then Buckaroo Banzai.  For those interested in such matters, it was flank steak coated in salt, cayenne, and Spanish paprika and boneless leg of lamb stuffed with (from my garden) rosemary, thyme, and mint and (not from my garden) ginger in syrup.  Both were prepared using my chiminea (the lamb down the throat and the steak grilled on top).  Thanks to everyone who brought anything, and thanks to everyone for coming.

Canceled: Movie Night Celebration of School Year Ending and Summer Starting and Whatnot

Double-Feature!

We shall see what the magic chest of movies has to offer.

Did I mention I have a real popcorn machine now?

I’m outside now and it’s half past nine.  It’s dark.  I’m guessing we can start the first film somewhere around half past eight.  As such I changed the start time to seven.  Get here and get your little quadrilateral of grass.

I haven’t shown Princess Bride yet so that’s a fine possibility.  Regardless the first film will be family friendly since some folks have said they’d like to bring their little people.  We can negotiate later over the second film.

Questions?  You know where to find me.

RSVP, Merci!

Looks like it’s a family affair.  Anticipate at least a couple of youngins.  Princess Bride and The Avengers are both possibilities.

I have just finished building a (rickety) shelving thing for the popcorn machine so that’s ready.

If you would like to bring some food of any sort, I will (as always) have my gas grill ready and a fire in my chimenea (great for hotdogs).  The banquet table awaits.

Just a little reminder to bring a blanket and a camping chair (or whatever) because I only have a few of each.

Current weather for Saturday:  Mostly sunny and 70.  Should be a fine evening for a backyard movie under the stars.

There are a number of important conflicts with this Saturday date.  Cecilie and I have decided it makes for a better date if we move the event one week.  I will change the event details now; the new date is Saturday 22 June.  Go celebrate Father’s Day this weekend and we’ll see you next.

The Machine
The Machine

Well, with the date change I may have lost my audience.  Unless I can get some firm commitments I’ll cancel this movie night.  It’s just no fun if I can’t have about eight guests with me and C.  Protest if you want me to keep the night going.

Movie Night Celebration of School Year Ending and Summer Starting and Whatnot

Sorry, friends.  Changing the date didn’t work out so well.  I’ll cancel this movie night this evening.

Old Movie Knights Group

Now reduced to a simple forum and no longer used since the move to Facebook.

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/movieknight

Well, Google is changing (limiting) some of the functionality of these
groups.  They are stripping them down to make them more like a simple
mailing list.

I have a couple of options to make our group the same as it is today.

First, I can use other Google services to create some of those missing
services and gimp along in a bit of a hobbled fashion.

Second, I can find a different was to manage this movie night group/
list/pages.

I will work on this over the winter and presumably have the new stuff
up and running by Spring.  I am open to your suggestions.

Ok, by popular demand (and here that means two people) I have created
a Facebook group.  This google group will remain active as a mailing
list, but all new events will presumably be coordinated through the
Facebook group (until Facebook loses it’s popularity and I have to
create yet another group).

Contrary to what has been claimed this will provide me with less
control (and less security and less flexibility) but whatever.

You ought to be able to request group membership directly:

http://www.facebook.com/editgroup.php?gid=126878290707044&sk=members#!/home.php?sk=group_126878290707044

Otherwise just send me a note on Facebook and I’ll add you to the
group myself.  I rather randomly went through my Facebook friends and
put folks into the group as I found them, but I likely neglected
several of you.  If you run into any snags or if you have any
questions, you can write to me directly.

Party and Movie Night

This is the final movie night party.  Good films, good people, and good times.

Go toward the (orange porch) light!

I’ve done these for three years now, but lately the turn-out has been less than optimal.  It’s a lot of work to put these on and so I’ve decided to reduce or eliminate these nights all together.  In short, if you’ve been thinking you’d like to come this is likely your best and final opportunity.

Thoughts, comments, questions?

(If I missed anyone on the guest list let me know and I’ll work to correct that.)

So, folks are asking about the movies.  I guess “It’s a secret” doesn’t go over well enough.  How about “It’s a secret but here are some hints”?

Two comedies (funny as hell).
There are British people involved…
… and perhaps, I say perhaps, some either dead or undead types.
Also, there is a high probability for glimpses of hot chicks.
And maybe a midget.
No ninjas (though you are permitted to wear your ninja outfit).

You like that?

I will be making sangria, as usual.

Ok, it’s been pointed out to me that ratings may be important to some.

Both films are rated R for one reason or another, but I will remind you that my parents took both my little brother and I to see Porky’s at ages 12 and 9 when that film came out and we have turned out just fine.

Well, mostly.

Look, piss off.

The weather is likely to be chilly at night so bring a blanket or a sweater or something to keep you warm (hookers are fine but you HAVE to keep them leashed at all times).

I am making my famous Sangria but you may want to bring your favorite beverage as you will likely disapprove of my collection (OE800 mixed with Red Bull?  Really?).

I will provide some random snacks, but I love it when people bring nibbles to share.

(My Hookah is for tobacco only but if you need a pipe let me know.)

More questions?  You know where to find me.

I’m going off-line for the rest of the day for Movie Night.  Call me if you run into any troubles (you can find my number on my profile/info page).

Party and Movie Night

Excellent night.  Good turnout.  Thanks to all for coming.

For those who did not, you missed some early (30’s) Popeye cartoons, Death at a Funeral (the original), and Lesbian Vampire Killers.

Season Finale Death at a Funeral and Lesbian Vampire Killers

  • Popeye cartoons (from the 30’s)
  • Death at a Funeral (the original
    British version)
  • Lesbian Vampire Killers

Well, it’s been a summer, hasn’t it?

An old friend of mine, Cecilie, will be in town on Friday 20 August
and so I will do my last movie night on that evening.  All the usual
stuff applies.  Ask me questions if you have any.

This will be the last night of this summer, and for future seasons I
will limit my movie nights to special occasions.

20 August.  That’s a Friday which is a little unusual.  Hope that’s ok
with y’all.

Likely the last scheduled movie night for me.

Let me know your thoughts.

I’ve done these for three years now  (four if you include the first
night), but lately the turn-out has been less than optimal. It’s a lot
of work to put these on and so I’ve decided to reduce or eliminate
these nights all together. In short, if you’ve been thinking you’d
like to come this is likely your best and final opportunity.

Hello, kiddies.

First of all, folks are asking about the movies. I guess “It’s a

Any other questions and you just send them my way.

I’m getting asked about what to bring, so I’ll go over the usual bits
especially for the new-comers.  You can see the definitive list here:

http://groups.google.com/group/movieknight/web/whatcha-packin

You will want to sit on something.  Could be a blanket.  Could be a
camping chair.  You are in control.  I have a couple of extras, but
don’t make me bring out The Comfy Chair!

The weather is likely to be chilly at night so bring a blanket or a
sweater or something to keep you warm (hookers are fine but you HAVE
to keep them leashed at all times).

I am making my famous Sangria but you may want to bring your favorite

Shit, sorry.  And you can show up at 7pm and the films will start once
it gets dark enough.  Don’t be afraid to be the first one here because
I always need help hanging the stupidhuge screen.

Thanks for the support.  It was a great night for a movie and a good
crowd.

For those that missed the shows and would like to recreate the event
in their private dream worlds, the night consisted of some early
Popeye cartoons (from the 30’s), Death at a Funeral (the original
British version), and Lesbian Vampire Killers.

The Incredibles Movie Night

Another backyard movie extravaganza.

  • [unknown cartoons]
  • The Incredibles
  • Blade Runner [cancelled]

I have selected two movies for our next gathering:

  • The Incredibles
  • Blade Runner

I own three or four different versions of BR and am open to discussing
which version is the right version.

I haven’t selected cartoons yet.

I have many bottles of my beer under refrigeration and ready to
drink.  You can tell me what you think of it.  I drank some last night
and it tastes nothing like Black Butte (nor does it look like Black
Butte), but it is pleasant and drinkable.

I am open to ideas about food for the night.  I have no specific plans
at this point.  Haven’t really had time to look at anything.  Does
anyone what to take charge of this?

Send all your questions my way.

Things to bring for those who are absent minded:

Something to sit upon (camping chairs and blankets are popular).
Something to snack upon (I have an air popper for those interested; also I have a grill and an open fire).
Something to snuggle (a blanket or a naked girl, as you prefer—bringing your host the latter gets you extra points).

Movie Night

(We only showed The Incredibles.)

Indoor Movie Night

  • [unknown movies]

Howdy, cow-kids!

I know you’ve been thinking about seeing the next movie in my
backyard.  I have been working on a system involving heated car seats,
woolen blankets, and umbrellas with the hope of having these nights
all year round.  Still in the planning stages, mind you.

Short of that, we’ll be kicking off the next season when the weather
warms again (May or June) and it will be a great season.

As a reminder to the old-timers and by way of introduction to the
novices, we have a thread for discussing your most loved and love to
hate movies:

http://groups.google.com/group/movieknight/web/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-theater

PS:  I will probably have a March birthday bash (not likely involving
a movie) for those interested in such matters.

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/movieknight/vPKx6qqwUTA

Friends; terrestrials; humans,

Lend me your anamorphic lenses.  I just wrote an article where I
review 10 zombie and horror films:

http://www.soundunreason.com/InkWell/?p=1633

Weather is a fickle mistress.

I regret to admit that the too cool nights may disarm our jubilee,
pictures in motion of which we are so fond.

Spring!  Always reminds me of the William Tell Overture.

I should like to gauge the interest in crowding into my small theater
to watch something short or simply gather round the homestead and rub
some elbows?

Whether outdoors or in, I have some terrific stuff picked out for this
summer.  Of course elbows always appreciate at least a little rubbing.

Read my review and let me know your thoughts about the possible
gatherings.  Either way we will shoot for a date late in May to give
the sun a chance to make up for depriving us.

Brought to you by James: http://JamesIsIn.com in conjuction with http://SoundUnReason.com

I know that’s a lot to think about, but if there is really no interest
in having an event in May then the next movie night will be in July.

Anybody?

Looks like the weather might just come ’round for us.  Either way we
will have some festivities on 28 May.  Note: this is a Friday.

This is only a couple of days before I leave for France, so come say
good-bye even if you can’t stay for the flick.

I am not clear if my beer will be ready for consumption by the 28th,
but I did brew an alleged Black Butte clone.  It’s fermenting as I
write this and will likely go into bottles pretty soon.

Also, I’m pretty broke with the whole no-job-taking-a-trip-to-France
thing so I will assumedly provide something less than my usual
retarded levels of way too many snacks and yum yums.

Any questions?  Send them my way.

Until then, stay out of trouble…

Howdy kids,

Yep, my beer won’t be ready.  We are bottling it in the morning.
We’ll drink it in July instead.

I have made two different soups for those who come hungry.  Snacks are
a welcome addition.  Something to go with soup?  Bread?

I have a half case of Fat Tire and a growler of porter from Port
Townsend.  Feel free to bring your favorite beverage.

If you have any questions let me know.  Otherwise I am looking to
seeing y’all tomorrow.

Since I keep getting asked…

The movie/party tonight is INDOORS.

Season Finale Movie Night

Another movie in my backyard.

I have not decided on movies, but I intend to make the first film family accessible (no, it will not be “The Little Mermaid”) and the second movie less so.  (For example the last films were “Across the Universe” and “Dr Strangelove”.

I will be making some smokey barbecue beef and some special sauces.  My grill and will be available as will my fire burning, taracotta tandoori-like chimenea for cooking as well.  You are welcome to, and encouraged to, bring your favorite barbecue dish.  Let me know if you have any special needs or kitchen requirements so that I can accommodate best.

Also, I’ll make my usual sangria.  Bring your favorite beverage as you like.

As a general bit of information, the bbq will begin around 6 (as per above).  The first film will begin near sunset (preceded by some cartoons)—which is near 8.

Those staying for the film(s) should bring something to sit on and something by which to keep warm (camping chairs, sleeping bags, blankets, sweaters, &c).

Did I miss someone on the invitation?  Let me know.

The weather is looking really positive (72 during the day).  Was touch and go for a bit there.  Sorry to you folks who are out of town or otherwise can’t make it.  Call me; we’ll watch a movie in my theater some winter evening.

Let me know if there are any questions.

I will be making some barbecued beef and a couple of different, yummy sauces.  My gas grill will be available; as will my wood-fired chimenea; I also have a couple of hot dog roasting sticks.  If you would like to bring something but are uncertain about whatever, give me a call or send me a message.

So many reasons not to come… busy friends of mine.

However, the weather is one great reason to come.  They have upped the high all the way to 81 for Friday.  I’ll be here all afternoon getting things ready, so feel free to drop in early if you have food-stuffs that require a little more time to get ready.  Just give me a call and let me know.

Looking forward to seeing those who are able to make it.

I have made two bbq sauces.  Both very different and both very delicious.  It’s been a productive day.

Ok, five and a half hours of smoking half a brisket is enough to exhaust me.  Just in case anyone was seeking out ways to exhaust me.  On the plus side, it’s gonna be yummy tomorrow.

Season Finale Movie Night

Thanks everyone.  It was a grand success.  If anyone would like to keep informed of other movie nights, you’ll want to join my google group—so please contact me directly.

Season Finale & BBQ Madness

  • [unknown movies]

Knights, untie!

http://groups.google.com/group/movieknight

Well, my hearty campers, we have a lot going on these days.  I trust
you are all still among the living after our wonderful heat wave.  I
know there are a lot of dead flying insects hereabouts.

Ah, but what about the goings-on?  I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this
(enough) but my brother is getting married.  After eleven years of
living in sin he has conceded to our devout mother and is going to get
right with the almighty flying spaghetti monster–or something like
that.  I think we ought to have a little celebratory bbq before the
sun goes down and our films begin.  Any takers?

I have ordered the replacement bulb even though I haven’t quite raised
enough in the bulb fund.  The largest ‘contribution’ came from my
neighbor who has been renting my driveway to park his boat (the funds
from which I have been placing directly into the bulb fund).  Anyway,
it’s on its way, so if the bulb pops we ought to be able to handle
matters.

Movies?

As you may recall I give my brother first movie choice.  Let’s try to
rally around our list and dig out a gem for the other film:

http://groups.google.com/group/movieknight/web/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-theater

PS: Poor Peter has been working so much that he can barely keep his
eyes open most of the time, let alone through a classic like Dr.
Strangelove.  As such we may wish to honor him with an actiony film to
help his nodding head.

The weather continues to look poor, and I have confirmations from
several people that they will not be able to attend this weekend.
Barring any serious protests, I am going to postpone this movie night
until early September (presumably the 5th).  That would be the final
episode of the season, so I would want to do a nice E.o.S. bbq–or
something like that.  We did that whole taco thing last year and that
went over pretty well.

Anyone who would like to come drink with me and listen to music in my
living room is welcome to do so.

Any questions, give me a call…

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/movieknight/bxf1GS0srB8

I am thinking real barbecue.  Sticky, sweet, and hot.

We can do this either this weekend (29 August), next (5 September or 6
September because Monday is a holiday), or the one after (12
September).

Talk to me, oh honerable knights of this whole movie thing.

Let the polling begin!

Seriously?  No one has any input on this?

Just me and the crickets…

Ok, mostly I’ve been getting responses (directly) that explain why
folks can’t chime in.  So I’ll just pick a date, Friday 11 September,
and only change that if I get an avalanche of negativity.  You can
snowball here, and I’ll make the proper announcement through a new
post in the next few days.

Ok, that’s one bell for Friday 4 September.  Anyone else want to make
a vote?

This is a tough time of year because everyone has the camping bug, but
11 September (Friday) will have to do for our purposes.

I will be making some smokey barbecue beef and some special sauces.
My grill and will be available as will my fire burning, taracotta
tandoori-like chimenea for cooking as well.  You are welcome to, and
encouraged to, bring your favorite barbecue dish.  Let me know if you
have any special needs or kitchen requirements so that I can
accommodate best.

I have not decided on movies, but I intend to make the first film
family friendly (no, it will not be The Little Mermaid) and the second
movie less so.

Also, I’ll make my usual sangria.  Bring your favorite beverage as you
like.

Thanks for all your support this summer.  It has been a great season.

Good thing we didn’t plan for this weekend: the weather is going to be
horrible.  Keep your fingers crossed for next weekend.

The weather is forecasted to continue improving and ought to be mostly
sunny (71) on Friday.  Perhaps the dogs are smiling on us.  Good bbq
and good movies.

I obtained a copy of Iron Man so that is a possibility.  I have some
other interesting options as well, like The Big Fish.  Anyway, should
be an excellent time.

Does anyone have plans to bring something barbecue like?  I’m going to
work on smoking some beef and I want to make a couple of different
sauces.

Oh, and the weather report is now predicting a high of 81 for Friday.
Looks like I picked the right day.

I’ll be here all afternoon getting shit ready, so feel free to drop in
early if you have things to get prepared food-wise.  Just give me a
ring.

Movie Night

  • [unknown films]

Don’t be frightened.  All is not yet lost.  But if it’s any
consolation, your enemies are doomed too.

On the bright side, it’s time to talk about our next movie night.  I
have a couple of newish films that none o’ y’all has likely seen:

Also, I would really like to try a nice foreign film (as in foreign
language):

I can hear it now: “I didn’t come to the movies to read!”  Pfff…
Run, Lola, Run only has about 20 lines of dialog so it’s a low impact
subtitle scenario.  Baby steps.  Have another sangria.

Again, I have no specific food plans.  We could do a potluck/bbq
beforehand if that appeals to everyone.

Let me know your thoughts.

Howdy, Campers…

Well, it’s been rather quiet around here with my brother running
around in Mexico.  (On the bright side he did manage to find a girl
willing to marry him.)  However, you may rest assured we are all G-O
for the next movie night.  I just checked the weather report from the
National Weather Service and the weather is going to be excellent.

There has been more interest in having some food before the film–and
I rather like doing that myself.  I will be providing Donation Dogs in
order to help augment the cost of replacing my projector bulb.  Don’t
feel obligated, but it’s a nice way to help out if you are able.

As always, my grill is gassed up and ready for anyone who wants to
burn something.

Also, having been inspired at least in part by the Secret Film
Festival I have decided to keep rather mum about which films I will be
showing come Saturday (and we are only five days away).  Nonetheless,
I guarantee great enjoyment all around.

Let me know if there are any questions (besides “What’s playing?”).
Come early for a pre-first-reel snack (say 6pm) and get your plot
plotted.  Or come for the films (sunset will be around 9pm).

The sangria is ready, stewing in its own juices.

I also smoked some ribs last night for those who arrive early (they
likely won’t last).

Plenty of dogs and buns.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all this evening.

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/movieknight/qjq7AYEglzo

A splendid time was guaranteed for all, and I think we made the grade.

The films, the ribs, and the sangria were all hits.

Thanks to everyone who helped out by donating into the fund.  We are
getting close to bulb territory and I will likely order the new bulb
this week.

The next night should come on 15 August and will, as usual, be at
least in part a celebration of the birth of the greatest brother on
Earth (played by Danzel Washington).  Watch for the announcement
coming within a couple of weeks.

Thanks again
